Coward Monsters Walk Among Us

On 13 September 2019, the country was shocked by the discovery of skeletal remains of a baby at Kg Salambigar. The following day, it was reported that a married couple has been arrested in connection to the discovery and that the victim was a 5 months old baby girl. [Case Ongoing]. As bizarre as it may sound, this is not the first time in the country that innocent babies / toddlers became victims of senseless violence or gross negligence that led to deaths, and certainly not the worst so far. These coward monsters have been walking among us for quite some time now, with the first known case happening as early as 1999. Warning: The worst case will make you sick to the stomach.

Here are some of the more recent cases:

Date: 26 August 2019
Victim: 1 year 4 month old girl
Crime Location: RPN Kg Lambak Kanan
Cause of Death: Injuries due to physical abuse (slapped, bitten, pinched, etc).
How the crime was uncovered: Alerted by medics
Person(s) Responsible: The kid’s parents (39 year old father and 36 year old mother), local, both on meth.
Sentence: 4 years imprisonment for the mother while the husband is yet to be sentenced.

Date: 20 December 2018
Victim: 2 year old boy
Crime Location: Lumut
Cause of Death: Injuries due to physical abuse
Person(s) Responsible: 34 year old boyfriend of the boy’s mother, uniformed personnel, local

Date: 17 August 2016
Victim: 3 year old girl
Crime Location: Perpindahan Mentiri
Cause of Death: Multiple internal injuries due to physical abuse – thrown, punched, slapped, kicked
How the crime was uncovered: Alerted by medics
Person(s) Responsible: The girl’s 29 year old uncle, local
Sentence: 13 years imprisonment, 8 strokes of the cane

Date: 13 September 2013
Victim: 3 year old girl
Crime Location: Everywhere, including in the car. Body was disposed in the bushes by the roadside at Ulu Kuala Balai
Cause of Death: Multiple injuries due to physical abuse.
Person(s) Responsible: The girl’s “foster” parents. They acquired the girl by conning the kid’s biological parents.
Sentence: 16 years imprisonment, 10 strokes of the cane for the man; 8 years imprisonment for the woman

Looking at the ages of the victims, they were 3 year olds and below. These are the period where they are at the mercy of their guardians. Had they gotten the chance to attend pre-school, their teachers would have noticed telltale signs of physical abuse at home, and the deaths could have been prevented.

It was reported that the 5 months old baby girl whose skeletal remains were recently discovered in Kg Salambigar was killed sometimes in May 2018. It is heartbreaking that no one looked for her, no one missed her. Her grandparents, uncles, aunties, perhaps. At least, someone other than her parents must have known about her existence and thus would have noticed about her disappearance. But, there was none. Really sad…

Family members of the perpetrators could be biased and prone to be in denial and turn a blind eye on signs of physical abuse to the child. This is where family friends and neighbours can step up to the plate. They can quickly report their suspicions to the police or the Family Services helpline number. But, how many of the public are well aware of this social responsibility and know what numbers to call? With the clearly increasing number of cases, more need be done to increase the public awareness.

Many, if not all of the perpetrators are within the 20-40 years age bracket. What went wrong? Why are they so messed up? What could explain their short fuses and acting out their rage in violence on the helpless infants. Drugs can be one of the explanation for the aggressive behaviours. In two of the recent cases mentioned above, it was alleged that the perpetrators were using drugs. Go figure.

Mental disorder or depression can also explain the lack of judgement. Unlike drugs abuse, the presence of mental disorder can’t be identified through blood or urine tests.  No one can say that they don’t have it without undergoing proper mental evaluation. A seemingly okay person can mask a mental disorder which can unravel into violence anytime. This can become easily triggered if combined with financial hardship, low self esteem, and other screw ups in the person’s life.

This brings me to the worst ever infanticide case in the country. Where do I even begin… Caught Off Gut

Where Was I When it Happened

Last night I was preparing for my presentation this afternoon. But I found it hard to focus as my mind kept on bringing me back to the fateful day 18 years ago…

It was an early day. My alarm beeped at 6.30am. We were heading to Singapore that morning. I was just a young officer back then, excited every time my name made the cut as delegation member accompanying my boss to meetings overseas with our foreign counterparts. It was more about the shopping than anything else. But we had to do the meeting first.

We checked into the Royal Plaza at Scotts hotel. The meeting was scheduled for 9am the next day. I was to give a presentation during the meeting, so I was a bit nervous. I made sure to run through my presentation again and again that night. It had to be perfect. All the time, I kept the CNN TV news channel on just in case there were new developments on the topic that I would be presenting on.

I remember looking at my watch, it was a quarter to 9pm. Then the Breaking News screen on TV caught my attention. WORLD TRADE CENTRE DISASTER in capital letters and the image of thick smoke billowing out of one of the towers of the building. My first thought was it was just a fire that broke out inside the building. I increased the TV’s volume. Still holding the TV remote I listened on. “A large commercial passenger jet was seen to hit the World Trade Center,” the newscaster said.

Oh My…..a plane crashing into a building. My heart went to all the passengers and people in the building. I prayed that they made it out safe. I was so naive to dismiss the gravity of the incident at that time. The thought of it being a deliberate act didn’t even cross my mind. It didn’t immediately register in my head that a large commercial passenger plane couldn’t possibly be accidentally flying over New York city that low.

Then just like having the life-flashing-before-your-eyes moment, I saw a plane flew straight towards and crashing into the other tower of the building. It was so surreal. My jaw dropped. Although I was thousands of miles away sitting in my hotel room, it felt like I was there witnessing the crash live from the building where the camera was.

I didn’t want to get my eyes off the TV as I watched in horror the unthinkable, unreal events unfolded. I fumbled around looking for my phone to very quickly alert my colleagues. I texted “Watch CNN Now!!!” Back then there was no WhatsApp yet. But I didn’t care about the outrageous roaming charge for SMS as I sent the text to everyone I could think of. Still, at that point, I thought the crashes were due to some glitch to the planes’ navigational system, a delayed Y2K impact perhaps.

As the breaking news broadcast covered the ensuing chaos, ROARRRRRR!!!! The first hit tower collapsed. It looked more like the building turned to dust and disappeared as the dust got blown away by the wind. When the dust cleared, the tower was gone. My mouth was wide opened the whole time, in disbelief. Then ROARRRRR!!! The other tower collapsed. The famed World Trade Center has disappeared, right before my eyes.

The world has changed since then. For those who were little kids at that time or born after 2001, they would only hear about this dark incident from their parents, educators, in books, newspaper archives, on the internet. For myself, and millions others who witnessed it live, we are forever bonded by the trauma we shared.

Where were you when it happened?

Old Song New Music

Remember Elvis’s classic songs Can’t Help Falling in Love and Always on My Mind that were sang in different music genres by other artists like UB40 and the Pet Shop Boys? Well, those are not what I am not going to talk about here.

The issue of unemployment is currently a hot issue in the country. But it is hardly a new phenomenon. Way back when, when there were no WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms, circa late 1990s, the public relied on the BB Opinion section to vent out their frustrations on things. Unemployment was one of them.

It was around the year 2000 that every parent’s dream life milestones for their kids no longer fall into place as they found their children unable to get work months, years after they graduated. So, what happened? What has led to this?

I remember watching on national TV, a pineapple farmer being interviewed. He said that  his pineapple yield was good, but some of them have to go to waste as supply exceeded demand. This was exactly what happened. The country has reached the point where the labour demand just couldn’t catch up with the number of people entering the labour market.

Statistically, in 1991 the percentage of working age population was about 61%. Then the percentage increased to about 68% in 2003, 72% in 2013 and 75% in 2018. There are more and more people in the working age population and there are just not enough jobs for them.

There is only so much that the government can do to create the much needed jobs for the unemployed. Creating jobs in the public sector requires money. To have funding for job creation requires economic growth. To have economic growth, the country needs to increase productivity. To increase productivity, the country needs a skilled labour force and of course a robust production sector to absorb the skilled labour. Do we have all these prerequisites?

Parents need to recognise this a long time ago, and prep their kids for the unemployment apocalypse. In fact what we are seeing today is just the beginning of its ugly face. The future rise of the robots will see humans being obsolete in the workforce. Just saying…

Whats Her Story?

I would say that I am not a busybody person. I don’t spend my valuable time seeking out for gossips and definitely not a scandalmonger, if that is what busybody means. But I am very observant and curious. I like to connect the dots. I feel better knowing the explanation of things. Things that I see, hear, smell or come under my radar that may have some crime element to them are those that make me curious the most. So it is habitual for me to stop whatever I’m doing, even get up from bed to check things out if I hear the elevator’s door chime or cars entering our apartment building compound at the wee hours of the day.

Late one night, close to 1 am, I was already settled in bed, about to doze off, when I heard the sound of the elevator stopping at my floor. I quickly went to my door and looked through the peep hole. There are only two units at each floor of our apartment building. The main door of one unit is exactly facing the main door of the other unit, about 10 meters away and the elevators are at the side, right in the middle between the two doors. So from the peep hole I am able to see very clearly who came out of the elevator and whether the person(s) are going to my unit or the one opposite mine.

I was relieved to see that it was my neighbour who stepped out of the elevator. A Chinese couple. It was not unusual for the couple to come home that late as they always did that almost every evening. My assumption was that they went out for late suppers. I never smelled any cooking from next door and given that the couple has no kids it was quite understandable for them to eat out instead.

But, wait a minute. If this couple has no kids, then who was the little girl walking out of the elevator right behind them? One thing I noticed straight away was that the little girl, maybe 6 or 7 years old, was wearing this vintage-looking white knee-length dress with puffy sleeves, and the dress was dirty with smudges of mud or something, her hair tied in a high ponytail.

The couple went to their door and the girl followed behind them. I didn’t get to see her face. The couple seemed to be oblivious to the girl’s presence. At that point I was already getting uneasy, but I kept on peeping. The couple unlocked the door to their unit, entered and shut the door behind them.

Oh no no no no nooo…what is going on?? I said to myself as I watched their door shut with the little girl still outside. She was facing their door just standing there, still. Right then, I could feel the hairs at the back of my neck stood and goosebumps across my body. I should’ve taken that as a sign to just drop it and go back to my room. But my curiousity got the better of me, so I kept looking.

My heart was pounding harder, nervous about what will happen next. Then the girl turned around and seemingly looking right at my direction. Yikes! What I saw was horrifying and sent me running back to my room hiding under the blanket. It was just a split second look, but the image of her face is forever imprinted in my head. She has abnormally big sloping forehead. Her hairline started half way back on her head. Her face is big with flat nasal bridge. Her big round nose was crumpled being smooshed left and right by her big swollen-looking cheeks. Her eyes are big and bulging. Her mouth curved down, her upper jaw protruding.

Under the safety of my blanket (yea right!) I was trying to make sense to what I just saw. I was hoping to hear my neighbour opening their door to get her whom they’ve forgotten to let in (still in denial that Ive just seen a ghost). What if she knocks on my door? what would I do? These thoughts were in my head. Then….I heard my main door slowly creaked open and shut. Oh god, please let this be just my imagination, I pleaded.

It went quiet, the sound of the night disappeared, I felt a sudden cool draft of air in the room, my cheeks felt swollen as they were covered in goosebumps. There she was, standing on the edge of my bed, looking right at me. It might be just 1-2 seconds before she vanished, but it felt like minutes. I tried to make myself feel better by insisting that everything was just my imagination. I didn’t sleep that night. I let all the lights stayed on until morning.

Everyone knew that our apartment building is haunted, but no-one ever had such encounter. Tenants heard things but never saw anything. They, including myself, heard the sound of kids running, the sound of marbles being dropped and bouncing on the floor, the sound of furniture being dragged, doors opening and closing, switch being turned on and off, faucet opening and water running, all at odd hours, between midnight and 3am. We also long knew that eventhough we are alone in the elevator, we were never actually “alone” in there.

I wonder why the little girl decided to show herself that night. At least now I am able to put a face to the entity that we felt presence in the elevator. She could be one of the kids whose making the sound of kids running that we often heard after midnight. The dress that she was wearing is definitely not from this era and why was it dirty. Whats her story, something that I may not ever get the answer to, nor that I wish to ever see her again.

Rest in peace….little girl, or haunt in peace, rather.

Daring but Stupid

27 March 2000 might have started like other ordinary Mondays for the Lexus manager of Gadong’s NBT showroom, until she discovered five brand new cars – 2 from inside the showroom, the other 3 parked outside (1xLexus LS400, 3xLexus IS200, 1xToyota Hilux) were missing (worth about half a million) when she came in that morning. There was no sign of forced entry. From this, police immediately established that the crime could have involved someone from the inside. Otherwise, how else would the thieves know that the establishment has no security guard, no alarm system installed and that it only has surveillance camera in the showroom which was only functional during office hours. The cars also couldn’t possibly be driven away without their keys which the thieves seemed to already have in their possession.

This thing happened at a time when vehicle thefts were getting more rampant in the country. The stolen cars were usually quickly transported across the border where they will be broken down to parts. But this was the first time that new cars were targeted and I don’t believe that the new cars were stolen for their parts. Brunei being so small, with nowhere to hide such big-sized loot, raised the question as to what the thieves were planning to do with the 6 new cars or whether they have actually thought about what they would do with them. It sounded more like a half-cooked plot executed badly.

The most likely intention would be to make some bucks by selling the cars to a syndicate. However, to do this, the thieves must have connection with transnational stolen car syndicate. There is certainly a good market for stolen luxury cars in the region, in Myanmar and Cambodia for example, and the syndicate is very proficient in discreetly transporting the stolen cars across national boundaries to wherever their intended destinations would be.

One scenario for the fate of the cars stolen in Brunei would be that they are smuggled  overland into East Malaysia then into West Kalimantan, then from there they will be transferred into containers at the Pontianak Port for shipping towards the route to their eventual destinations where their “customers” await. Thailand is a known transit point for stolen cars where from there they are smuggled overland to Cambodia, Laos, all the way up to Myanmar. If the stolen cars reached Peninsular Malaysia, they can also be transported across to a Singapore port then shipped off to Australia and New Zealand. The possibility is endless. Interestingly, from my research (google search), the Toyota Hilux is among the top commonly stolen vehicles in Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. The stolen Hiluxs have even made their way to the hands of ISIS in the Middle East. Wow!

It was later revealed that the theft was a teamwork of 5 locals – 4 in their 30s (thieves A, B, C and D) and one 49 year old (thief E) – and one Indonesian man (thief F). Thief E is the manager of a security firm who is a retired military officer, although he was only implicated for assisting to conceal the stolen vehicles, after-the-fact. Two of them (Thieves C and D) are his employees, a maintenance man and a driver of the security firm. Thief C is an ex police officer. Thief A, alleged to be the mastermind, is a military officer who managed to evade capture for almost a month after the theft. Thief F was never apprehended as he quickly left the country after the incident. Like Thief E, Thief B is also a retired military personnel and was only implicated for assisting to conceal the stolen vehicles.

Of the Lexus cars being already sold in the country at that time, only 4 of them were blue and the Lexus Sales Representative knew exactly who the 4 buyers were and their respective plate numbers. Im sure the thieves were ignorant about this fact given that Thief C was later spotted driving the stolen blue Lexus by the Lexus Sales Representative (What are the odds??). This led to his arrest on 29 March 2000. It didn’t take quite a while for Thief C to spill the beans leading to the rest falling like dominoes.

By 30 March 2000, all the stolen vehicles were recovered. 3 of the Lexus were recovered at Thief A’s house. Thief B was later acquitted of the charges against him and was set free. Testimonies at the trial also revealed that Thief F (who was never arrested) acted as “lookout” during the crime and that Thief A had the keys to the cars and the showroom sliding door (Interesting..). It was also revealed (or alleged, rather) that two NBT officials were complicit in the carnapping.

In August 2000, thieves A, C, D and E were all found guilty of their respective charges. Thief A was given a sentence of 18 months in jail. Thieves C and D were each sentenced to four years imprisonment and one stroke of the rattan (seriously? just one stroke?). Thief E was given a sentence of 6 months in jail.

The lack of thoughtfulness to at least stage a forced break-in indicated how novice they were as thieves and to hide the stolen cars at your own home is beyond belief. Their ignorance about “inside crime 101” led to their arrests hardly a week after the theft. It was really an anti-climax to what seemed set to be the most daring carnapping act in the country.

My Top 5

Top 5 things that annoy me.

5. Price stickers. I got two issues with this thing. First, why the heck, of all places, the sellers always placed the price stickers in the middle or front side especially on glasswares like plates, glasses and jars, knowing that they are sooo hard to peel off completely. Second, their sticky residues are just too stubborn to remove. I tried to scrap them off using my nails and they tend to just smudge to other areas, looking worser than before. The same goes with the annoying road tax stickers which left a lot of mess. Arrrgh!

4. Suction cups. I never had any success stories with suction cups. No matter how hard I pressed them against the glass or tiles, wet them first and everything, they will pop off the moment I turned my back. Some were promising at first, but they would eventually end up on the floor. Arrrgh!

3. Sticky tapes. Sticky tapes come in many sizes. Whatever size they are, I struggle to find the end of the tape roll all the time. Sure they are tape dispensers and many tips on youtube, but who got time to prepare all that during every tape situation? Double-sided tapes are equally annoying too, especially thin ones which are so hard to peel off. Arrrgh!

2. Garbage bags. Garbage bags come in packs of 10, sometimes 50. I don’t know if there is a trick to doing it that Im not aware of, but everytime I tried to get a fresh garbage bag I struggled to neatly slip one out without unraveling the entire pack and having garbage bags falling all over the floor. It seems like I have to lay the pack on a surface, unfold them, take one, then fold them back again. Quite annoying especially if I’m in a hurry. Arrrgh! The other issue with garbage bags, in fact all plastic bags and everything plastic including disposable clear plastic gloves, is that they are so hard to open, it took quite a struggle each time. Arrrgh!

1. Dust. Omg! Where do I even begin. Even talking about it gets me worked up. Dust dust dust everywhere! everyday! I can even see them now on my screen and keyboard while I’m typing this. Even my vacuum cleaner is depressed from being too overworked. They came back in less than 24 hours. Arrrgh!

Deady Sleep

When cats sleep, they often twitch, sometimes you can hear them snore and their bodies look relaxed. When dogs sleep, they look dead. Dopey often gave me panic attacks when I got home and saw him lying by the roadside. He got me all the time.

Trip to KB

My search for potteries brought me to KB where the first and only ceramic workshop in the country is located. The last time I went to that part of Brunei was six years ago during our family trip to the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria. As for KB town, I have no recent memory of going there, apart from the time when I tagged along with my dad during his pusu supply runs. That was ages ago.

So, last Saturday, with the ceramic workshop as our main destination, off to KB we went. I managed to entice my niece (and her car) into accompanying me on my KB “adventure”. Besides, she knew well that there was no way that I could drive my old jalopy 93 kilometres to KB without it acting up or falling apart along the way.

It was 11am and we were all pumped up, taking pre-trip selfies and all. Of course, first order of the day was to empty our bladders, then stopped by the kedai runcit to get some drinks and snacks for the road, filled up the gas tank, then the road trip began.

The first 30 minutes of the drive on the highway was quite normal as it is the regular stretch to take to my mom’s place. We are very familiar with the sequence of landmarks, each with its own tales. At the left side, beginning with Bukit Shahbandar, then the Jerudong Park Playground, the Istana Nurul Izzah, the exit to Kg Lugu, the back gate of the Maraburong Prison, the exit to Kg Bukit Panggal, the Sungai Basong Recreational Park, the Ma’had Islam Arabic School and the Serambangun Industrial Park.

Things got more interesting, at least for me as a first timer, as we reached Bukit Beruang. The big flyover bridge across the highway caught my attention. Whats this?? I said as I took a picture of it. Grinning, my niece told me that the thing has been there since 2015. I did a quick google search on my phone and there is a national housing scheme (1,500 houses) in the area and also a Sixth Form Centre completed in 2014 and 2012 respectively, so the flyover was built to cater the increasing traffic.

As we passed the flyover then there it was, the new highway – the 18.6-km Telisai-Lumut highway, a 10-15 minutes-long stretch that connects with the Lumut-Seria bypass highway. With this new highway, road travellers will now bypass Telisai and Sungai Liang. Instead of seeing the Kg Telisai Mosque, KK Koya Restaurant and the Sg Liang Soon Lee Supermarket along the way, we see what I would describe as the most beautiful and calming scenery one can enjoy while in a car.

It was like something out of a dream. I might be overreacting, but seriously that was the image in my head when work and people become too in-my-face and I just want to get in the car and drive away (although my niece was the one driving) to a destination unknown (where there is internet connection) over the horizon. The blue sky with stacks of white puffy clouds, the luscious green forest were all gorgeous. I was soaking in my moment of zen, before I knew it, we have reached the exit to KB town. I looked at my watch. It was 1215. Time to eat!

Hw1

Hello KB

After 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Bandar, we finally arrived to KB at 1215 pm. No, I will not talk here about the giant teapot and its four cups at the first roundabout we saw as we turned right towards KB, simply because I don’t think the landmark is that spectacular and I struggled to make sense of the explanation as to why a big teapot and not just a giant replica of the nodding donkey instead, KB being the oil districtKB of the country and all. Just saying…

We didn’t have much time to waste as the pottery workshop closes at 4, so we skipped checking out the KB Sentral Shopping Centre and went straight to the town centre for our lunch which we had pre-decided to be at the Beanery & Co. Cafe. The cafe was easy to find, its green facade made it pop out from the rest. Despite it being lunchtime, there were just two diners at the time when we came insideBeanery, a caucasian couple who were just about done with their meals. Next-door was a different story. One side of the cafe’s wall is all glass, so we could see the people doing laundry inside the laundromat overlooking it. It was quite distracting.

After the couple left, there were just me and my niece inside. We started goofing around, switching tables, taking pictures, moving chairs and rearranging the things on the tables for our photos. I got it then why people recommended not to miss the restaurant when visiting KB. The interior was cozy and homely feeling. Before we knew it, it was already close to 2pm. We needed to make a move.

Beanery2

Since the pottery workshop is just about 5 minutes drive away, I thought we still got time to check out the nearby shops, not enough time to stroll down the blocks though. We saw some cute cacti and succulents at one of the shops. Im not a plant person, but I do have a weakness for cute things. So after admiring and fondling them, I decided to bring back two of them with me to Bandar. Yes, they are sold in Bandar too, but Ive not seen one that looks like a mini tree. Come on, just look at how cute they are.

Cacti

My niece also grabbed 3 pots of them. The seller neatly packed the plants in a carton, placed crumpled newspapers in between the pots as buffers.

As we paid, the lady seller explained about the strict watering ritual. “This one every two days, this one once a week” she said pointing to each pot. “Don’t overwater”, she reminded. What?? These are real?? I joked, then I said ok ok and gave a thumbs up, but being notoriously forgetful as I am, the moment we exited the shop I was already asking my niece, “which one is which and every how many days again?”

Mindful not to damage the fragile plants, my niece cradled the carton in her arms. There was one more shop I wanted to check out which caught my attention from the car earlier when we just arrived. Turned out that it is a shop selling party supplies and other cute stuff. I must say, this shop puts all the party shops in Bandar to shame, choices and cost-wise. It was like a party store on steroid. From the ground floor to the first floor, it got everything under the sun for parties. Me and my niece were like kids in a candy shop. Especially with our family block party at the end of the month, the find could not have come in a better time. We grabbed lots of stuff even with my niece still holding the carton, we managed. If I ever got a reason to come back to KB, it will be this shop.

We joyously went back to the car, happy with our shopping. The time was 2.45pm. We needed to get going. Three roundabouts later, we finally got to the pottery workshop. The building bearing the address looked like an ordinary house. By its side is a large golden gate. There was no one around. We thought that the workshop closed early or something. We refused to accept that we have failed our mission to KB. My niece went out of the car to look for some sign of life. Finally, a pick up pulled in. They were the employees of the workshop. They said just honk, so we did. The golden gate opened. The workshop is actually behind the gate. At last!

Pottery

We were excited to see the racks of ceramic works. Behind the racks we saw the same employees we spoke to earlier. I told them about my intention to buy some unpainted potteries for the pottery painting competition that I am organising. They told me to speak to the management. I looked around and saw a door labeled “Administration”, knocked on the door and inquire inside. Which organisation are you from? the lady inside asked me. I said none. It has become apparent at that point that they are not used to getting walk-in individual shopper. I also found out that they don’t sell the potteries off the shelf, and that I have to place an order and that they need at  least 3 weeks to a month to produce them. What a bummer!

Pottery2

What a sad ending to our KB adventure. But wait! One of the employees was thoughtful to mention that they have some extra stock of pottery tea cups. Although what I wanted were flower vases, I thought tea cups would be good enough. So I bought 20 of them at $3 each. I suppose the price was a bit outrageous for such a tiny thing, but I was too tired to dwell  on it.

Two full tummies, 5 pots of plants, lots of party stuff and 20 tea cups later, we were ready to head back to Bandar. But before that, as recommended by my niece, we must stop by Naafi convenience store at the British Brunei Garrison in Seria. I have known about Naafi but never been there. People, even from the other districts, go there to get foodstuff that are not sold in other stores here, like fancy instant food, cookies, candies and ice-cream. I think its not much about how the food tastes, but more of just wanting to walk down memory lane, reminiscing on the time they spent in Europe. True enough, as we walked in, the smell of costa coffee which filled the store, brought me back to UK. I let my niece rummaged the store while I just paced from shelf to shelf, not looking for anything specific. After paying, I went and waited in the car while my niece was enjoying the Cadbury flake ice-cream that she bought, having her own memory lane moment.
